Are You Holding Yourself Back?

You’ve all seen those people at the gym… hanging out, leisurely doing their weights and cardio.  They seem to be there passing the time so they can say they “went to the gym.”  It’s almost as if going to the gym has become some status symbol.  However, going to the gym definitely doesn’t mean that you are getting results!  Are you your own worst enemy???  Are you haphazardly going through the motions without any destination or REAL goal?

You remember the times when you worked out hard… and had a vision of the body you wanted.  Working hard, most people achieved that type of body at one point in their lives; only to take it for granted.  Eventually, you began to eat more and more of what YOU wanted, instead of eating the foods you were supposed to eat.  Slowly but surely, you began to lose your definition and pack on the pounds.  Over this time you probably got older and more comfortable.  In this comfort state, (caused by marriage, relationships, work, or laziness) you LOST ALL MOTIVATION to be truly fit

Many people lose their motivation at some time or another.  However, it’s up to you to regain control of your life and not lose focus of what makes you feel good about yourself.

  1. Leave your cell in the locker (unless you need it near for work related stuff)
  2. Set at least one personal fitness goal for the day(BEFORE you get to the gym).  It could be something as simple as doing 2 extra minutes on cardio OR increasing your repetitions by 2 on each set.
  3. Find a picture of YOU (not a model) where you looked your best.  Put it on your wall, or fridge … somewhere that you will see it everyday.
  4. Allow for plenty of rest.  Not only do you need sleep, you also need to stager your workouts.  You can’t beat yourself into the ground every single time you go to the gym.  Pick days when you will REALLY push yourself to your breaking point at the gym.  Every other day is a good goal.
  5. Find ways to motivate yourself into better shape.  Buy a size smaller pair of jeans, buy something with each little goal you hit, keep track of your progress.

Everyone slacks off now and again.  As long as you don’t lose focus of your goals then you are sure to have success in fitness and SHOW IT.

Feel The Burn In The Pool

When you are faced with injuries, the best place to burn calories is in the Pool!  This form or exercise allows you to move somewhat weightless, without putting pressure on your joints.  If you know someone who HATES to workout because they can’t stand to be overheated .. then the pool could whip them into shape quick!  These new ankle weights for the pool could add that extra weight you need to mix up your cardio routine and keep it interesting.

“Swimming is one of the greatest types of cardio because you can work your body, but you never have to worry about getting too hot. After doing laps, while my muscles are warmed up, I like to do some strength training moves while I’m still in the pool. If you strap on these Aqua Power Ankle Swim Weights ($38.33), you can feel an amazing burn with the water exercises you already do, like leg lifts, walking in the water, or you can hold onto the edge of the pool and kick. They’re great if you like running on the bottom of the pool, or deep water running. The cool thing about these weights is that they come with five, one pound weights for each ankle, so you can add or remove as many as you want, and change them easily between exercises. They’re great if you’re bored in the pool and want to try something new. You’ll strengthen and tone your muscles and make an already tough workout a little bit more challenging (credit)”

If you have tried everything to get your loved one fit, but you just can’t seem to motivate them onto the elliptical; then maybe it’s time you enticed them with a “nice dip in the pool.”  They can still get a great workout and feel energized for their day.  If you are facing an injury, don’t stop working out… just work out smarter!!!  Low impact exercises can still give you great results without ruining your routine!

Olive oil and flax seed have been praised for years on their healing, and antioxidant properties.  However, coconut oil has been overlooked!  Coconut oil is rich in MCT oil or (medium chain triglycerides).  MCT oil has been used for years by professional body builders.  The body converts MCT oils into a pure energy source, while keeping you full.

The MCT oil mimics the mother’s milk…. maybe that’s a turn off when you think about it.  However, mother’s milk has tremendous healing powers!  Not only that, MCT oil has the ability to raise your metabolism!!  Everyone needs that!

Green Tea During The Holidays Keeps The Fat Away And The Celebrities Happy

The holidays are here, it’s cold, dark and full of Christmas treats.  If you want to avoid gaining the pounds over the holidays then maybe green tea should be added to your “To Do” list along with your shopping.  Green Tea can help you stay energized and healthy during the season so you don’t end up looking like your Christmas tree when January comes.

Think you need a second opinion to be convinced???  Three big name celebrities use green tea and even request it to be in their dressing rooms!  Jennifer Lopez, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Lynsey Lowhan are huge fans!

  • “Lohan instructed her entourage to arrange for two cases of the Pomegranate Green Tea to be dispatched to her hotel while she was in London promoting Herbie: Fully Loaded in July.
  • Lopez and teenage actress Lindsay Lohan are both huge fans of AriZona Pomegranate Green Tea (source).”

Key Facts About Green Tea

  • It speeds up your metabolism.  If you go to the store and look at many of the top selling fat lose products, you will see that more then half of them have green tea!
  • Works to control blood sugar levels (we all need that!)

“Green tea may be useful as a glucose regulator — meaning it slows down the rise in blood sugar following a meal.

It does this by slowing the action of a particular digestive enzyme called amylase. This enzyme is pivotal in the breakdown of starches (carbs), that can cause blood sugar levels to soar following a meal. This is pretty exciting stuff — along with a chromium, and possibly a vanadyl supplement, green tea might be the missing link in proper glucose management (source)”

* Controlling your blood sugar plays a huge role in fat gain and loss.  If your blood sugar stays even, then you can control  your hunger, and keep from gaining excess body fat due to huge increases in glucose (sugar).

The Holidays are fun, however, you don’t want to have to pull your “fat jeans” out of the closet to accommodate your new size.  Think smart, eat smart, and workout so you never have to make a new years resolution.

7 NOT SO Healthy Foods

So now you’re eating “healthy” but are the foods you’re eating really that healthy????  Here is a list of foods that most people would consider good eating choices and the drawbacks of that food.

1.) Granola Bars–  How could this be bad for you??  Its oats and nuts with a little bit of chocolate thrown in for flavor.

THE FACTS:  Most of the granola bars out there are dipped in either honey or some kind of syrup.  This could leave you satisfied one minute and starving for more sugar the next!  Remember, excess sugars leads to excess fats!

2.) Tea Drinks–  Tea has been applauded for it antioxidants, calming inflammation, and helping to prevent cancer.

THE FACTS:  Most tea drinks on the market are full of sugar! Most teas on the shelf are so over processed that very few actually posses the benefits of regular brewed leaves.

3.) Pretzels–  Ok, so pretzels are better then potato chips.  They are very low in fat and they go well in lunches.

THE FACTS:  Pretzels are no better then eating white bread (the enemy)!  Not to mention, that one serving of pretzels contains nearly a quarter of the amount of salt for one day.  They also lack nutritional value and fiber.

4.) Muffins–  They are a quick breakfast and they sometimes have berries which are rich sources of antioxidants.  Bran muffins are full of fiber.

THE FACTS:  Most muffins are 2 to 3 times bigger then they used to be.  This means they posses 2 to 3 times more calories and fat!  The average blueberry and bran muffin contain 20 grams of fat or more!  That’s nearly half of your allowance of fat for the day!

5.)   Rice Cakes –  They have been praised for being low calorie, low in fat, and easy.

THE FACTS:  Rice cakes turn into sugar in your blood very quickly which can be stored as fat.  They are also high in salt.  Salt equals water retention…. not good for people trying to lose weight!

6.)  Fruit Snacks–  Not eating fruit, maybe you can get something from these healthy low calorie snacks.

THE FACTS:  These little bags of treats may have vitamin C but not enough to make any kind of impact!  These fun snacks are LOADED with sugar.  They have little to no nutritional value and absolutely no fiber.  A total waste of calories.

7.)   Frozen Yogurt –  Nutritious and full of healthy bacteria for your intestinal tract.

THE FACTS- Not all frozen yogurts are processed the same.  Some have the healthy benefits for your intestines while other lack it completely.  Keep in mind that some yogurt (although low fat) is packed with sugar and calories.

Thought you had it all figured out?  Confused about what to eat?  Feel free to write in and ask me questions on food or exercise.  Keep reading… the next article (tomorrow) will outline a book on the right food choices for a leaner healthier you!
